In Mumbai, 3.5 Million people travels daily in Mumbai Local Train and only 3500 travelers are using Go Mumbai Smart Card on daily basis.  Card system was initially introduced in London, Singapore and got very successful.

The Card was first introduced in Mumbai in 2006-2007 and was Central Railway officials expected major use of this facility. However, this system was Failed. This was first Introduced for BEST buses, and then for Central and Western Railway.

BEST conductors were also given the hand-held devices to swipe and validate the cards; The devices were installed at all railway stations for the ease of the passengers. More than 100 SDPs - Service Delivery Points are set up at BEST bus stations

Cost/Charges of Go Mumbai Smart Card:
The cards will be available in multiples of Rs 50, The maximum you can buy is upto Rs 5,000(I am sure you don't want to do that :)  ).
